Cheat Detector

Detects if other players are cheating, then stores them in a local database and warns you if you play them in the future.

Every check watches the packets the server broadcasts about other players: their positions, rotations, arm swings, damage events, knockback, and block placements. Nothing is sent anywhere, and the database lives in .minecraft/config/medved/cheaters.json.

How a player becomes a cheater

A cheater verdict is sticky. Score fades with a 45 day half-life so old evidence stops convicting new players, but an existing verdict is only removed by ,cheaters forget or ,cheaters wipe.

Settings

Sensitivity

Scales both the limits each check uses and how much buffered evidence it needs before reporting. Strict flags sooner and tolerates less.

Protocol

Legacy applies 1.8-style combat rules, where block-hitting is a normal manual technique and a longer unbroken run of it is needed before Auto Block reports.

Auto works it out per server. The connection cannot answer this on its own: your client normally speaks the version it is running. When ViaFabricPlus is present, Cheat Detector also reads its negotiated target version and recognizes 1.7/1.8 servers directly. Servers with legacy PvP may still accept modern clients while changing the combat rules, so Auto also uses two fallbacks:

  • A private list of known legacy-combat networks.
  • The attack speed attribute. Removing the 1.9 attack cooldown means raising it far above the vanilla 4.0, and your own attributes are synced to you, so a value of 16 or more is read as legacy combat.

Max Distance

How far away a player can be and still be tracked.

Join Grace Ticks

Suppresses checks after a player first appears. Teleports, velocity, damage, low TPS, packet buffering, vehicles, unusual surfaces, and movement effects add separate automatic exemptions.

Alert Mode

Chooses persistent local chat alerts, temporary notifications, or both. Alerts include the check, violation level, and the evidence that crossed the configured threshold.

Alert Threshold

The decaying violation level required before a normal alert is shown. Independent repeated evidence raises this value; clean time slowly lowers it.

Show All Evidence

Shows each suspicious evidence event before it reaches the normal alert threshold. It does not print clean samples or every observed packet. Intended for testing and threshold tuning.

Record Detections

Writes detections to the database. Turn this off to keep alerts without building a record. Players the server has no player-list entry for, such as NPCs and holograms, are never recorded.

Warn On Join

Prints a warning the first time a recorded player appears in the player list, with their verdict, detection count, and the checks that flagged them.

Mark Suspects

Whether suspects get marked alongside confirmed cheaters. Cheaters are always marked. Cheaters show a red icon, suspects an orange one.

Mark Tab List

Puts the warning icon in front of the player's name in the tab list.

Mark Chat

Puts the warning icon in front of any recorded name that appears in a chat message. Chat only carries text, so names are matched on word boundaries, and a name sitting inside a longer word is left alone. This covers server chat, system messages, and the client's own alerts.

Mark Nametags

Puts the warning icon in front of the player's in-world nametag. Works with vanilla nametags and with the Nametags module.

Warning Icon

In the tab list and on nametags, hovering the icon shows why the player is on the list: their verdict, detection count, session count, score, and the checks that flagged them.

Detection VL

The violation level one check has to reach before it is written to the database. Well above the alert threshold, and rate limited to one detection per check per 20 seconds.

Conviction Score

The accumulated, corroborated score needed for a cheater verdict. Suspect starts at 40% of this value.

Retention (days)

Records untouched for longer than this are dropped on startup and by ,cheaters purge. Manual verdicts are never pruned.

Clear Database

Deletes every record.
